In the hill homes of Kumaon, women draw Aipan on floors and doorways with rice paste on red ochre — grids, dots and lotuses that mark every welcome, every festival, every beginning. The geometry looks strict, but it is really a language of good wishes.

Gond artists of central India fill deer, birds and trees with dots and dashes until the whole surface hums. Every painting is a story passed down by song first and brush second — a forest remembered in pattern.
